A Big Week For SIEVX
18 August 2002
Parliament resumes tomorrow after a recess of several weeks. The CMI Inquiry ended during the recess and the final report is due to be tabled in the Senate on Wednesday. However it is highly likely that deadline will be extended. What is not so clear is whether the Select Committee will sit again in an effort to fill in the huge gaps and test the glaring inconsistencies in evidence gathered to date.
The Committee will be asking the Senate for an extension of the deadline. It should be apparent what is happening by Monday afternoon.
IIn other developments, Margo Kingston is back from holidays and will be speaking at Gleebooks in Sydney on Thursday with Patrick Weller, the author of Don't Tell the Prime Minister - an account of the children overboard affair and its implications. Of course, she won't be able to resist talking about SIEVX, so if you are interested in meeting one of the most vocal critics of the government's line on the Affair, here is your chance.
The other key person who has forced the SIEVX issue onto the public agenda is also appearing this week. Tony Kevin will deliver a paper on the SIEVX affair at The Tampa: One Year On Conference in Sydney on Saturday morning. His speech will be up on this web site shortly after it is delivered.
Finally, Piers Akerman had a go at Tony Kevin on Insiders, the ABC Sunday morning political affairs program, referring to him as 'that singularly obessessed former diplomat, Tony Kevin'. Akerman is one of the few people to write on the SIEVX affair in defence of the government. Readers might like to respond to him at the Sydney Daily Telegraph.
