Spare a thought for another disaster

Jason Koutsoukis lists the number of lives lost in 'Our worst disasters', (AFR, October 14).

This list puts into perspective the huge loss of life that occurred 12 months ago this Saturday when 353 people died on the vessel dubbed SIEV-X (suspected illegal entry vessel) by the Senate's children overboard inquiry.

SIEV-X sank in international waters, well within the Operation Relex surveillance zone. Bali has been described as being on our doorstep - so, too, was this sinking.

As we mourn the events in Bali last weekend, let us spare a thought for these 353 people who drowned, some of whom also have relatives among us in Australia.
