Imagine if the boat had been full of Australians
Letter to SMH
Kay Kan
7 April 2003

Tony Kevin is one of a handful of people who continue to remind us that in October 2001, 353 people died en route to Australia. ("Lost at sea", Herald, April 5-6). Their deaths have been ignored and no formal attempt has been made to inquire into the largest peacetime maritime disaster in our region.

Questions have been raised in the Senate that a people smuggling disruption program may have contributed to their deaths and that Australia had links to this program. The Senate has passed a motion calling for a full judicial inquiry, and as Kevin pointed out, this has been ignored by the Government.

Imagine if this was a ferry disaster, or an air or rail tragedy involving Australians and the Government ignored it.
